What Is a Root Canal?
When excessive damage and decay begin to affect the pulp (blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue within the tooth), root canal therapy completely removes this soft inner tissue and preserves the exterior of the tooth. Patients who need a root canal will often experience a significant amount of pain or tooth sensitivity, indicating they need to see the dentist as soon as possible. After the infected tissue is removed from the tooth, the patient can experience great relief and restored oral health.
What To Expect during Root Canal Therapy
A local anesthetic is used on the treatment area to numb any pain. Those with excessive anxiety about the procedure can speak to their doctor about the use of additional sedation. We understand the nerves and unease that patients may experience, and ensuring your comfort is a priority.
During root canal therapy, the tooth is isolated with a protective sheet called a dental dam. Next, the doctor will create an access point in the tooth, and use small instruments to clean the damaged tissue from within the tooth. Once the pulp chamber and the root canals (centers of the tooth roots) are completely cleaned, the inside of the tooth is sterilized. The tooth will then be filled with a rubber-like material and the access point is sealed with a filling. During a second appointment, your doctor will place a dental crown to protect and restore the tooth in terms of aesthetics and function.
Recovery and Aftercare
You may feel some tenderness near the tooth for a few days following the procedure while you heal. Any discomfort is typically managed with over-the-counter pain medication or, in some cases, you may be prescribed pain medication. Post-treatment care consists of some basic guidelines:
- Do not eat until the numbness in your mouth subsides, to avoid biting your cheek or tongue.
- Do not chew or bite using the treated tooth before the dentist fully restores it.
- Be sure to brush and floss as you normally would.
- If the filling becomes dislodged, contact us right away.
